I love characters in series that are dark and sad. Eeyore has been one of my favorite characters growing up because he was not peppy but his 100 acre woods friends loved him. He was included in all the activities and was not asked to change who he was or uplift his spirit. There are other great characters like Wednesday Addams in the new Netflix series who's roommate Enid is peppy and full of energy but they manage to support one another. Inside Out 2 movie has a new character called Ennui that symbolizes boredom and dissatisfaction who is part of the team regardless of how much he contributes. Now I know this may not be the opinion of others but to me in all these scenarios give examples of unconventional characters having space to be themselves (granted Wednesday Addams makes the space).
As a therapist the reality is that most of my clients do not feel this way. They feel that others around them expect them to be happy and do not allow them the room to feel anxious or depressed, which is upsetting. The problem is that those same people that don't know how to make room for the emotions of others are themselves struggling to make room for their own emotions. The truth is this work of vulnerabilty and connection starts with the internal work of processing our own emotions and our trauma. Unless we know ourselves, prioritize our mental health we can't make room for others to show up genuinely. People are messy.
So let's make sense of our messes and if you need help with that reach out to us and allow us to help you make sense of things.
