"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Elenor Roosevelt
I love this quote by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt because no one can make you feel less than you are without your consent. Hate to admit that many of us consent to our own self deprecating thoughts. We beat ourselves up because we have not met the expectations we have created for ourselves based on what we were taught growing up. We were taught that we are only as much as our careers or the life we have created.
This belief that we have to go to school for 13 years graduate, go to college, get a few degrees, get a job, climb up the ranks, have children, raise them, and then retire. Seems easy and very cookie cutter. We are not cookie cutter. We also are expected to make these decisions about our entire future in our early 20s which makes absolutely no sense because our prefrontal cortex is not full developed until approximately the age of 25 years of age. Which makes sense why often times people will change career paths later on in life.
We only have one life and we should never be forced to confirm to a life that causes us discomfort or stay on a path that doesn't suit us. Who we are comes from our history and the moments that have defined us. It's the actions we have taken in moments where we have been tempted and tried. Our person is defined in the moments that others have needed us or come to us at their weakest. Who we are is all about our actions in a daily life.
Many people I know will beat themselves up because they have not accomplished a career, but when someone is in need they are the first ones to take their shirt off their backs for someone else. At their core they are good people with good hearts they have just lost their purpose and direction in their careers.
