"If the ocean can calm itself, so can you.We are both salt water mixed with air." - Nayyirah Waheed

Living in Florida we are about an hour away from the beach and I love it. Some of my best experiences have taken place in salt water. Now there are various types of people who go to the beach; those like my husband who were dragged their by a loved one but they hate sand, those that love to soak up the sun, those who enjoy watching the scenery, and those like me that have to do something active because we are easily bored. I am the person that goes to the beach and loves to fight the waves.

Anxiety is like the ocean waves. They come in various magnitudes, with the ability to knock the breath out of you if you are not careful but under the right circumstances who can feel accomplished because you survived and weren’t bested. Many people who I have encountered that struggle with intense anxiety hate it perhaps because of the stigma of what anxiety and they are ashamed, or because they fear medical ramifications. Nevertheless anxiety by any other name is still fear. If you fear fear itself then you are simply creating a hamster wheel that will continue spinning until it is overwhelming.

“So when we are having anxiety we are suppose to just sit with it?” Yes. Feelings are meant to be felt, fighting them or trying to bury them deep down does not stop them from existing it simply means they will show up at other moments stronger than the incident that caused them. Anxiety sucks. Anyone who has experienced anxiety can attest to that. It comes on all at once and feels like the air has been sucked out of you, or an elephant is sitting on your chest. Your heart feels like it is beating out of your chest like a caged animal that wants to be free. However it does not last forever even if sometimes it feels like it does. With that knowledge know that with the right tools this too shall pass and sometimes our bodies want us to know we aren’t ok.

However it is ok, not to be ok, it’s ok to not feel like things are in your best interest.

Once the anxiety passes and your logic is turned back on think about ways that you can live your truth and feel safe and secure.
